Haunted House

A shaded house on a hill with glowing windows, a moon and bats. One of the harder ones, and it looks great lit up. Difficulty: Hard.

How to make it

  1. Print the stencil and trim the paper close to the pumpkin outline.
  2. Cut a lid (or a hole in the bottom) and scoop out the seeds. Scrape the front wall down to about 1 inch thick.
  3. Tape the stencil onto the pumpkin. Poke along every line with a pushpin, a dot every few millimeters, then peel the paper off.
  4. Cut out the black areas with a small serrated carving saw. Start at the middle of the design and work outward.
  5. For gray areas, peel away just the orange skin with a loop tool or vegetable peeler. Don't cut through. They'll glow softly.
  6. Pop a battery tea light inside, turn the lights off and admire it.

Kids pick the design, poke the dots and do the scooping. Leave the cutting to grown-ups. A battery tea light is safer than a candle.
